Q. Are you a data compiler, list broker or list manager?
A. All of the above. In addition, we are a licensee of partner data.
Q. What is the difference between each of the above?
A. A DATA COMPILER obtains data directly from such permissible sources as the public record, opt-in subscriptions, etc. A LIST BROKER provides the valuable service of assisting you with making knowledgeable list acquisitions, generally at no added cost to you. A LIST MANAGER is responsible for marketing a client organization's data and often maintains the data and fulfills the orders. A licensee of partner data is typically in a transparent relationship that exists for the convenience and mutual profitability of the list owner and its licensee.
Q. Many data companies, list compilers and brokers will not disclose the exact source of all or certain of their files. Why is this and what is your policy?
A. Data Marketing is highly competitive. It is a necessary practice in the industry to protect certain proprietary list sources and compilation methods as trade secrets This is often required by list owned by third-parties as well. However, most reputable data companies will disclose the generic sources of their compiled lists (i.e. "public records" or "automobile registrations" if not the specific source).
Q. What deliverability guarantee do you offer?
A. AIM is pleased to offer industry standard deliverability guarantees on most of its compiled lists. Deliverability guarantees on third-party lists are set by the list owners.
Q. What is the difference between "List Maintenance" and "List Management"?
A. Where "List Maintenance" generally pertains to the process of maintaining, cleaning and updating your data, "List Management" refers to a revenue opportunity for the list owner. This is where an organization's house list ("housefile") is marketed to approved, third-parties by a commercial List Manager (usually a data/list company) who handles everything involved including list promotion and marketing, sales and order fulfillment. The list owner receives a revenue-share from the proceeds of each list rental. Some organizations will rent their active housefile (customers, members, donors) while others limit third-party list rentals to their inactive customers or donors, or lapsed members. Often these lists are re-branded and may not identify with the list owner organization. In the industry, managed lists fall into the "Response Lists" category since they have been proven in the marketplace by the list owner.
Q. How do you handle consumers who do not want to receive unsolicited direct mail, e-mail or telemarketing calls?
A. We maintain rigorous
standards regarding our
data updates and file
hygiene. Once a
consumers name is
released to the DMA's
Mail Preference Service
as a "Do Not Contact"
preference, or once a
phone number is released
on the national Do Not
Call list, these records
are suppressed from
release at the
customer's option.
No one offers more
reliable, "can-spam
compliant" opt-in email
addresses than AIM.
These addresses are
sourced from list owner
partners whose opt-in
subscribers have agreed
to receive information
and offers from
third-parties. If we transmit your email campaign for you, we will start with "a permission pass" to provide the recipient with an additional opportunity to opt-out or reconfirm their opt-in status.
Q. How long have you been around?
A. AIM was newly founded in 2005 by a highly respected 35-year veteran of the direct marketing industry who started in list compilation and brokerage in 1972,
went on to found and
owner-manage a full-service
marketing communications
agency serving a prestige
client list in the nation's
capital for more than a
